The roads of wine




The road of Trasimeno, the Etruscan-Roman one, the road of Cantico and that of Sagrantino ... four roads that go across Umbria creating attractive itineraries for the discovery of precious wines and local vineyards.

In the mild climate of Trasimeno, on the gentle slopes of Montefalco, between the hills of Perugia or on the Martani hills, between the mountains and the valleys of Orvietano or Amerino... there is no area in Umbria that is not covered by extensive vineyards and at harvest time, they are tinged with alluring colours and scents.
The clay and limestone soil, the sloping hills that allow excellent exposure, the abundance of water in the subsoil and the mild climate of the lakes have always favoured the cultivation of excellent indigenous or imported grapes and the production of excellent wines. In these lands viticulture has a long history, dating back to the Etruscans. And then the Romans and then Benedictine monks... over the centuries, even with ups and downs, the culture of wine has always maintained, even renewed itself. It is the land itself that asks for it, so rich and so generously endowed with all the characteristics that make its every fruit good! And then centuries of cultivation, history, culture and passion of wine experts did the rest and today little Umbria offers lovers of good wine 11 DOC wines i.e. recognised quality wines from small, limited production areas; and 2 DOCG wines, the recognition given only to those internationally renowned DOC wines such as Sagrantino di Montefalco and Torgiano Rosso Riserva. A rich and excellent production that covers four wine areas, four roads with beautiful harmonious and evocative names just like their superb products.

The road through the hills of Trasimeno, with good climate mitigated by the lake, takes us on a journey through vineyards planted on the edge of a forest or an olive grove, in the territories of Tuoro and Passignano, around Castiglione del Lago, the marquisate of Corgna or the town of Pieve and Panicale, in the land of Perugino.
Here the recognised DOC wine is "Colli del Trasimeno" and the most precious and special vines are Gamay del Trasimeno, imported it appears in the Middle Ages, red in colour, fragrant, very special and markedly different from that which is cultivated in France for the Beaujolais. The Grechetto, instead, white, owes its name to its delicate aroma that perhaps reminded ancient people of the flavours and aromas coming from the eastern Mediterranean. But, despite its name, it is probably a native vine, present in all of Umbria, featuring a round and clear grape and in this area, coming in a short, cylindrical and compact bunch.

The Etruscan-Roman wine road is the oldest wine area of Umbria. It winds between Terni and Orvieto and touches the territories of Amelia, Narni, Allerona, Alviano. Etruscan areas, then Roman, crossed by the Tiber River that flows between tufa hills, forested mountains and green valleys.
It is home to white wines such as Orvieto Classico, a white DOC with grapes from the restricted area of Valle del Paglia, or Grechetto. But there are also full-bodied reds such as Rosso d'Orvieto DOC or the elegant Lago di Corbara Doc or Amelia DOC, white, pink or red.

The Wine Road of Cantico goes through a fascinating area, steeped in century-old culture and at the same time with a lively, strong and generous nature that surrounds and embraces the ancient villages and castles scattered along the path that descends from Perugia to Assisi until Spello and Cannara.
A wine area which produces as many as 5 DOC wines (Assisi, Colli Perugini, Colli Martani, Torgiano and Todi) and 1 DOCG wine, Torgiano Rosso Riserva with a bright ruby red colour.

The road of Sagrantino winds all around Montefalco, Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Giano dell’Umbria and Castel Ritaldi. A green and open territory, almost completely hillside, dotted with medieval towns of rare beauty and harmony. From here, from vineyards that almost creep inside villages, the Montefalco DOC wines are born. They can be red if produced with Sangiovese and Sagrantino grapes or white if from Trebbiano and Grechetto grapes, and Sagrantino DOCG, a dry and harmonious red wine produced from the ancient vine of the same name, probably imported by the monks in the Middle Ages who used it only during religious ceremonies.
